2017 Walker Station Vineyard Chardonnay

Ronn Wiegand Issue #187-189 February 2020

5 stars—exceptional | $56 | 186 cases made
Very fine RRV Chardonnay: aromatic, full bodied, supple, and very well balanced, this wine has wonderful texture and flavor (pineapple, pear, white peach, candied lemon, clove, vanilla, roasted nut, green tea, oak), and a very long finish. Great value.

2017 Estate Reserve Pinot Noir

Ronn Wiegand Issue #187-189 February 2020

5 stars—exceptional | $78 | 290 cases made
The Estate Reserve is exceptional: richly flavored, supple in texture, and well balanced with fine, complex aromas/flavors (cherry, rose petal, red currant, black tea, kola nut, caramel, toasty oak), a very long flavor evolution, and a tannic, persistent finish. Displays both depth and refinement. Warrants several more years of aging. Unfined, unfiltered.

Ronn Wiegand Issue #187-189 February 2020

5 stars—exceptional | $72 | 165 cases made
The Walker Station Pinot Noir is richer still; a wine more depth and structure. It is a very fine wine: fleshy in texture, crisp, well balanced, and long and lightly tannic on the finish, tasting of strawberry, strawberry jam, plum, red currant, black tea, toasty oak, nutmeg, and sage. Warrants aging.

2017 Mes Filles Vineyard Pinot Noir

Ronn Wiegand Issue #187-189 February 2020

5 stars—exceptional | $72 | 92 cases made
Mes Filles Vineyard is in the Sebastopol Hills, very close to Kanzler Vineyards. This 2017 is a superb wine: intensely flavored, refined in character, full bodied, and structured; a Pinot Noir that has ripe, complex aromas/flavors (strawberry, cassis, blackberry, red licorice, cherry, black tea, toasty oak), evident tannin, and a very long finish. Can be aged.

Terrific 2017 Pinot Noirs, displaying intense, refined character, and excellent depth. Of them, the RRV is full bodied, velvety in texture, complex in aroma/flavor (cherry, strawberry, red currant, black tea, nutmeg, close, rose petal, toasty oak), very well balanced, and persistent on the finish. Very fine quality; warrants further aging.

The 2016 Chardonnay Walker Station has a big kiss of reduction and sulfur as well as impressive crushed citrus, white flowers, and hints of brioche. It’s clean, medium-bodied, nicely balanced, has plenty of fruit, and a clean finish. In short, it’s a high-quality, classic Chardonnay to drink over the coming 3-5 years.

The 2016 Pinot Noir Walker Station has a deep, rich, nicely balanced style as well as terrific purity in its dark currant, plum, and black cherry fruits. Nicely textured, with plenty of floral and spice characteristics, this beauty builds nicely with time in the glass, has ripe tannins, and a great finish. Mostly destemmed and aged 14 months in 50% new French oak, it’s an incredibly well made, high-quality Pinot Noir from this team that should keep for upwards of a decade.

More spice and cola notes emerge from the 2016 Pinot Noir Russian River Valley, and it’s another well made, balanced, character filled effort from this estate. Showing more smoky, earthy, forest floor notes with time in the glass, it has good acidity, plenty of fruit, and a great finish. Fermented with 15% whole clusters and aged 14 months in 37% new French oak, it’s going to keep for upwards of a decade.

The 2016 Pinot Noir Estate Reserve is the flagship of the estate and was 80% destemmed and aged 14 months in 50% new French oak. It’s not far from the Walker Station cuvée with its purity and balance and has classic notes of smoked black cherries, dried earth, bouquet garni, and spiced plum aromas and flavors. It will be even better in another year or two and should evolve for a solid 7-8 years, if not longer.

Ample spiced red fruits, kirsch, white pepper, flowers, and an almost garrigue like quality emerge from the 2016 Pinot Noir Mes Filles, and it’s incredibly elegant and finesse-driven, yet still has plenty of fruit and texture. With an almost Rayas-like floral character and elegance, it’s medium-bodied, nicely concentrated, has integrated acidity, and a beautiful finish. I’m impressed. This wine was completely destemmed and spent 14 months in 25% new French oak.

Moderately dark garnet color in the glass. The nose is really engaging, with bright aromas of blackberry, blueberry-pomegranate, spice and underbrush. Excellent grip and intensity in a mid weight plus, ripely fruited style. More sap, more flavor delivery, but also more apparent alcohol compared to the RRV bottling. Satiny in the mouth with ingrained tannins, satisfying acidity and a notable finish. Undoubtedly, this wine will benefit from more time in the cellar.

The 2015 Pinot Noir Estate Reserve is deeper ruby colored and offers a more masculine, smokey, early profile. Currants, smoked herbs, damp earth and meaty notes all flow to a concentrated, medium bodied Pinot Noir that has good acidity, integrate tannin and a clean, lengthy finish. Where the straight Russian River Valley cuvee is ready to go, this will benefit from a year or three of bottle age.

Dark garnet color in the glass. Aromas of blackest cherry, black raspberry and clay loam lead off. An attacking charge of purple and black fruits aim to please and the flavors last and last. The mouthfeel is velveteen, the tannins blend in inconspicuously, and only the slightest hint of vanilla suggests an oak presence. Can be drunk now or aged for several years.

The 2015 Pinot Noir Walker Station was completely destemmed and spent 14 months in barrel, 60% new.
